Construction Laborers

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • At minimum, employees of Davis Construction, Inc. must be 18 years or older

    • (may be 16 as allowed by our Apprenticeship Program).

  • A licensed driver with reliable transportation and a clean driving record.

  • Available to work Monday through Saturday

    • (Sundays if necessary). 

  • Pass a drug screen.

  • Able to work inconstant shift lengths / hours, which are determined on a per-project basis.

  • Able to work nights if required by the project.

  • Prepared to comply with all safety regulations, whether it is company policy or required by law.

  • Available to work in out-of-town locations.

  • Willing to work in adverse, non-life-threatening weather conditions.

  • Willing to enroll in the Michigan Department of Transportation’s On-the-Job-Trainee Program (Davis Construction, Inc. -specific) if a qualified individual (“Woman” or “Minority,” as defined by MDOT) or our Apprenticeship Program.

  • Have the ability to communicate effectively and listen, comprehend and carry out instruction.

  • Able to supply small hand tools (hammers, tape measures, pliers, etc.) and meet basic apparel requirements (work boots, proper fitting / protective clothing).

 

Hiring Requirements

All construction workers may be required to routinely perform a wide variety of tasks involving standing, walking, lifting, carrying, climbing, stooping, kneeling, etc.  Listed below are some of the essential functions that workers on a construction site may be required to perform:

 

  • Work at different heights.  Climbing up and down ladders, machinery, and other objects.

  • Maintain balance in all situations.

  • Reach for hold handles and operator manipulated objects and materials.

  • Push, pull and frequently carry objects as tools, materials and equipment weighing up to 80 pounds.

  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, stand and walk for long periods of time.

  • Coordinate movement of eyes, hands, fingers, and feet.

  • See and hear well with or without correction to avoid safety hazards to themselves and others.

  • Distinguish colors and utilize depth perception.

  • Fuel, change oil, add fluids, and lubricate machinery.

  • Operate various types of equipment and machinery.

Crane Operator

Davis Construction, Inc. is ACTIVELY seeking an experienced crane operator for civil infrastructure (water and waste water treatment plants) and heavy-highway construction (bridges). 

 

Our jobs are typically located in the lower peninsula of Michigan with occasional work in the U.P. Several of our jobs pay prevailing wage rates (actual wage rates vary per project specifications).  We offer comprehensive benefits to include medical, dental, life insurance, and vision.

 

Job Description:

Operate lattice boom crawler and hydraulic rough terrain cranes to lift, move, and set objects in support of bridge and civil infrastructure construction operations.

  • Lubricate and adjust crane and attachments and provide normal maintenance.

  • Knowledge of use of crane in moving heavy loads and skill in manipulating crane in difficult situations.

  • Understand proper hand signals for cranes.

  • Must keep daily activity log on crane (inspection of crane cables, slings, hoses, etc.)

 

Activities include but are not limited to:

Bridge Construction (Lansing Headquarters): pile driving with impact and vibratory hammers, hoisting/setting reinforcement, placing concrete with use of garbro bucket, erection of precast concrete and steel girders, and erection of temporary work features (cofferdams, box girder falsework, work trestles, etc.).

 

Water & Waste Water Treatment Plant Construction (Grand Rapids Headquarters): Flying concrete forms, hoisting/setting reinforcement, placing concrete with use of garbro bucket, erection of precast concrete, rebar, and etc.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Operating within cab, manipulating controls. 

  • Constant attention to boom, to material or equipment being moved or manipulated and to other equipment, personnel or obstructions in the area.

  • All construction workers are required to routinely perform a wide variety of tasks involving standing, walking, lifting, carrying, climbing, stooping, kneeling, etc.

 

Candidates Must:

  • Pass medical, drug and background check.

  • Have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

  • Have a high school diploma or GED.

  • Be able to work overtime as necessary such as extended work days and weekends.

  • Work outdoors in variety of weather conditions.

  • Travel to different jobs across the state as required.

  • Be able to understand work directions & communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees.

 

Ideal Candidates will have:

  • Previous experience as a crane operator or a similar role.

  • Working experience handling different types of cranes.

  • Relevant certification (e.g. NCCCO) or be willing to become certified after training and on-the-job experience.
